Your air conditioner filter should be cleaned every 30 days to ensure airflow is not being restricted and it is working to its maximum potential.
A dirty filter can lead to many problems such as failure of the entire air conditioning system, your air conditioner is not keeping your house cool enough, your air conditioner has to work harder, and your energy bill increases.
It is important to note that if your filter is ripped or has a tear, it is necessary to replace said filter.
Here are the steps to cleaning your air conditioners filter.
- Vacuum your filter. Vacuuming your filter will get rid of any large particles blocking the filter. Make sure to get as much as possible before washing the filter. Also, be careful as to not rip the filter during the vacuuming process.
- Wash the filter. After vacuuming the filter it is still necessary to wash your air conditioners filter. Submerge the filter in a container with half water and half vinegar. Make sure the container is large enough to submerge the entire filter and will not tear the filter. Let the filter soak for anywhere from 1 to 4 hours depending on how dirty it is.
- Dry the filters. Place the filter outside on a dry towel and let all the excess water and vinegar evaporate. It is important to not not to rinse the filters off after they were soaked as that will reverse the sanitation process.
Once all these steps are completed your filter should be cleaned and ready for use. Make sure to put it back into the air conditioner before turning it on.
